Wahiawa Picks Up Nazarene Church Trash and Nazarene W&W Team Picks Up Wahiawa Homeless Trash

Friday March 10 was another productive work day for our team. The main theme of the day seemed to be trash clean up. We have accumulated a small mountain of trash and scrap material from around the project over the past week and today right after breakfast, the garbage truck and three workers showed up and hauled our trash away. We were so excited we all stood in the street entertained by the truck crushing everything from old tiles and lumber to a car hood and roll cage.
The city workers and their giant trash compacter made quick work of our mountain of mess. We cleaned up the gravel as best we could scouring the area for broken glass, screws and nails and got the area ready to be used as much needed parking spaces for the church.

After getting our mess taken away by the city, we headed to the Karsten Thot Bridge where many homeless people live here in Wahiawa. We spent about 4 hours there filling one and a half large dumpsters with garbage being collected by one particular homeless man living under the bridge, in a home he fashioned from material he has been collecting for about 8 months and covering and surrounding in garbage.. Several other homeless people in the area helped us clean up the mess. They appreciated our help because they want their area to be kept organized and picked up too. It is estimated that it may take up to 6 large dumpsters to contain the garbage that has been collected by this one individual. This ongoing clean up was organized by ALEA Bridge an organization that helps the homeless in the Wahiawa area. Joe Acosta, Director of Operations, was there today to oversee our work. It was a privilege to be there and play a part in helping the homeless people in this area.As you will see in the pictures, the trash we were cleaning up was under one side of the bridge, but the dumpsters are on the other side of the bridge on this very busy highway. We hauled most of the garbage across the road in shopping carts we found under the bridge. Most of the shopping carts belong to the Tamura Market just up the hill from this location.

After lunch and devotions by yours truly, we got back to the projects around the WCC. We finished the coffee and food delivery kiosk late today. We added the door, trim all around the structure, and installed the metal roof. After some trim painting, this will be ready to load on the trailer and be put into service both raising funds through donations from the coffee services and delivering much needed food to the homeless of Wahiawa.

This afternoon was also completed more trim painting inside and outside the church and finished getting floor protectors on the approximately 100 chairs needing them in the sanctuary. After another amazing dinner we all settled in for the evening. We need to be up and moving early tomorrow as we join in on a community PUSH 2017 prayer walk tomorrow morning at 7 AM.
